The e-commerce dilemma
Every week, a client asks us: *"Should we just use Shopify, or do we need a custom build?"*
The answer depends entirely on your operational complexity, desired customer experience, and scale. Here is how we break it down.
When to choose Shopify (or Shopify Plus)
Shopify is an incredible platform. We recommend it when:
1. You are selling standard physical goods. If your product variants (size, color) fit neatly into standard e-commerce models.
2. Speed to market is critical. You need to launch in 4 weeks, not 4 months.
3. You want out-of-the-box integrations. You need to plug into standard fulfillment centers, accounting software, and marketing tools without custom API work.
✱ "Don't reinvent the shopping cart unless the shopping cart is your unique value proposition."
When to choose a Custom Build (Headless/Custom Stack)
We push clients toward custom architectures (like Next.js + Stripe + Custom CMS) when:
1. Complex Digital Products or Subscriptions. If you are selling software, highly customizable bundles, or complex tiered subscriptions, Shopify's rigid backend becomes a nightmare of third-party apps.
2. Extreme Performance Requirements. If you need sub-second page loads across thousands of dynamic pages, a staticly-generated custom front-end will always beat a liquid-templated monolith.
3. Bespoke User Experiences. If your brand requires 3D WebGL product configurators, highly non-standard checkout flows, or deeply integrated user dashboards.
The Hybrid Approach: Headless Shopify
Often, the best answer is both. We frequently build Headless Shopify setups.
We use Shopify for the robust backend (inventory, checkout, payment processing) but build a custom Next.js/React frontend. This gives the client the operational reliability of Shopify with the blazing speed and limitless design freedom of a custom build.
